Timber Furniture Care

Bailey & Co. Outdoor furniture care instructions.

Iroko is a highly durable hardwood that is both insect and rot resistant, making it the ideal type of wood for Outdoors. All our timber furniture is made from Iroko timber, known as African Teak, which originates from West Africa. Iroko is a hardwood, which is tough, dense, durable, and resistant to decay. Its colour varies from golden yellow to dark brown when freshly cut but matures to an even shade of brown or silver over time.

It is well known for its use in boat building, furniture and the construction industry and does not require as regular treatment and oiling when used outdoors compare to other timbers making it a great choice for outdoor furniture. Our timber has been seasoned, cured and sourced from our chain of sustainable suppliers.

All of our furniture pieces will get an aged patina with time – this is intentional and will add to the character of the design. When kept outdoors surface cracking, discolouration and warping of the timber naturally occurs with all solid wood furniture.

The design of our outdoor furniture allows for this naturally occurring movement of the wood and should not undermine the structural integrity of the designs.

Should you wish to delay the natural aging process of your outdoor furniture, apply outdoor furniture oil more regularly. Oiling can be done as often as once a month in extreme climates, but once every three months is the standard.

To prevent Iroko from staining, aging or discolouring, teak oil can be used as a protective measure to repel water and shield the wood from sun and weather.

Maintenance:

We recommend the following routine is carried out every 3 - 6 months, preferably in spring and autumn, to help the Iroko reach its full service life.

The maintenance routine can be done as follows with Iroko timber oils. Generally, it contains boiled linseed or tung oil as the main ingredient as well as mould inhibitors and chemicals that filter harmful ultraviolet rays.

Alternatively, any other suitable product of your choice can be applied providing you follow the products instructions.

1: Remove cushions

2: Very light sand if you don’t want silvering of timber, this is to the owners preference as the weathered silvering is commonly desired.

3: Remove dust with a dry and lint free cloth.

4: Make sure oil is mixed or shaken properly before use.

5: Evenly apply oil to timber with a cloth. Mutton cloth If possible.

6: Only apply a medium film of oil – it should not be dripping

Leave on for about 15 minutes to allow the oil to penetrate. Then wipe off the excess oil – if you leave it on for too long it will dry like syrup and become sticky

*Dispose of the used cloth by first saturating it with water as the oil is flammable.

The next maintenance routine will depend on how quickly the timber changes due its exposure to the elements.

Day to Day care:

After everyday use, wipe down the wood surface with a slightly damp cloth. Although the oil does protect the timber surface it will not make it impenetrable. Wine, vinegar, oils and other spills should be wiped up immediately to avoid staining. If staining occurs a light sand can remove the stain.
